The Gales of November

A Lake Superior Sunset, Ontanogan, Michigan

They say the gales of November come early. Yet looking back at midsummer on Lake Superior, who would have thought this water could ever be so still?

This photo was taken in July from the beach in Ontanogan, Michigan. The wildfire smoke from Canada was just beginning to roll in. The next day we wouldn’t be able to see more than a few feet in front of our faces. But this night - the water was quiet and the sunset was ablaze with pinks and lavenders. One sole sailboat motored toward the harbor as the sun dipped below the horizon.

I have never seen Gitche Gumee so calm. The water temperature was 75 degrees and there were no waves lapping at the shore. It was a once in a lifetime experience.

Before the gray sets in and the swells turn violent, there is this: July air holding its breath, and a solitary mast tracing a flat horizon across glass. A quiet counterweight to the storms we know are coming.
