  Perched high on the plateau above the James River, Chimborazo Park is a multi-layered sentinel. Valued for its defensive high ground, it served in the 1860s as one of the largest military hospital complexes of the Civil War. It was built on progressive medical ideas for its time—detached pavilion wards, open-air ventilation, and self-sustaining operations that yielded some of the lowest mortality rates of the entire conflict.

  I came up the plateau late in the afternoon, specifically waiting for the light to drop low enough to cast long, raking shadows across the ground. Standing at the edge of the hill, looking past the mature oaks and weathered ironwork toward the expanse of the river valley below, the value of this place hits you instantly.

  It’s easy to get lost in the tragic history of the Civil War, but standing here in the quiet, you realize why this spot worked: the constant river breeze, the isolation from the city below, and an unobstructed, million-dollar view. It doesn't feel like a graveyard or a military outpost; it feels like a sanctuary built on stillness. I wanted the frame to balance the weight of the history against the nature and open air that made this plateau a place of healing.
